Hey we are back yeah yeah more what's the mood we have good line and again we had food we have wine we're gonna talk about that a little bit. But first let's get it in -- are living by design -- Now that we have in the studio yeah evening that's. We have when Whitman with -- Whitman architecture and try to save us three times faster after some time and why not a chance I could. That it can happen. And we have Gary Robinson. I custom home builder with his company called home as art. So. You just decide who wants to go first thing. Tell us a little bit about your firms and and why you decided to get into this crazy building business. Let's give -- -- -- because German right now I don't know. -- IA. I don't know like I got out of architecture school I come from Boston originally. And I came down here and went to graduate school and I got out of architecture school and nobody was hiring architects. He was another recession similar in this. And I ended up buying an unfinished office building on bee caves road. With fourteen anchors 141000 square foot building. 405700. Dollars. Don't you wish you know I'm okay. I. Put together rag tag group of guys one. My Foreman slept in -- -- coming you know station wagon dominating night. And starting -- -- other projects old school Austin you know I can't energetic. -- that's out of congress yeah. And so I just. You know there were a lot of fun things that happened I remembered Super Bowl Sunday. As somebody hit the water main on the caves road with the next coordinator and then shot this guy his -- water. Directly on to my newly finished off -- -- oh yeah. Affect who we managed to salvage it then they couldn't get the crews out there and we've trained an entire mushroom. That's right outside of Barton creek. -- so we knew we had some fun with and -- you know you can't make this stuff oh yeah. You know you can I don't care how much of Jon -- accept since -- I sort of thing got the bug for designing and building and and you know I've done a combination of development on my own and then also. Having clients and and doing what -- Dream up and I drama for the well and and that's what I want to institute for you to share with our listeners is -- your style of architecture. Com is very different in a very beautiful way. What tell me your inspiration or what led you to that type. Style. I approach it with a very open mind and a lot of to -- free associations. Avoid it might be and then. I look at the functionality of it because I'd like to create something that's. A work of -- and also highly functional. So it has to be beautiful from every angle. And -- and also has to function properly. And if you word to describe your style to the listeners what would you say that would be and it's hard to -- years in a box. Yeah a lot of it has to do. And with that particular client and once there -- -- -- is. Carrying nine did. Two houses there were very different and so. Wanted to and the client was very over the top then he you know he wanted something. Pretty much stood over the top and then I have another client who's stuck mid century guy and he wanted something kind of subdued so. In each case I tried to. Look at the timeless elements of those styles and now I can express. You know creative generational thing. And -- you're you're the the projects that I've seen that you've done are just very clean but very expressive. So. You know and not so much you know the -- -- task and now that yeah. Which -- offices it's the opposite of that so tell us a little bit about your firm. So we're a small boutique firm live. You know what I've been here been in Austin for 27 years and and practicing architecture for about twenty years senate and to we work could all over the stayed. Harris is working on a house in four words today. That's sort of the mountain modern. -- got a lot of heavy timbers and things like that and it. So it's it's very much personalized service and I it doesn't have to be a big house so I mean we did. A little house and -- still it was 2000 square feet. 300000 dollar construction budget that was on the monitor was on my terms or -- very last month at the end. It's just I I. I don't care how big the project is a small project is -- enjoy the people. And I'm gonna do it. So in talking you know one break we're just discussing. The officers are huge moved him to modern contemporary and here -- some people who you know. As Gary was saying -- you kind of against it you know nearly. Just now being more traditional and you you just said the union really can didn't go in modern interpret for a long time in this town. And if you're seeing a change around you right when Tuscan was probably you -- me go in modern before -- and was probably been super hot and then if you know like everything was Tuscan. -- about -- mum on modern in the mid ninety's right now so as as everything changes around you how do you mean disorders keep on trucking and authentic to what you -- do you are you trying to make sure the use state. Left or right of what's been normal what's. And on I try to stay ahead of the curve he. When I see trends that look tired or. Dated. But yet still may be our new and Austin I still try to factor that in and so. I just do what I liken what my clients like and it's. It doesn't necessarily have to fit into. What's popular what's in the latest magazines. I try to tap into the collective unconscious and whenever I build and this is where Gary comes and it's. It's got to be authentically constructive thing because I think. You know a lot of the problem -- Architecture today is that it. It relies on the in the image in the past but not the substance in the pasture so I'd rather have something that's substantial. And authentic. In its material in the program. Do you listen to your point when you look at in the the project folder on the on wins. -- website and also not easy to say. Shape it is clear and you were talking about you know being to the writers of the last. It's not the need to architecture so if you want if you don't want to let you know and add me to house. Wayne has a real gift with that and and there's there's a balance to that I think also could you can do something that's so not mean to and it's outlandish and people are like yeah. I didn't like why they'll have yet to white male horse the runway dress yet yeah you where once again we're good coffee filter dressed -- It's got to filter shouldn't. You're looking at it but not for the reason that you think -- Yeah it now I do try to look at how this is gonna look in ten years and how it's gonna resell. And I'm happy to say that the you know. A couple of people that have three sold have have done well then. To dude can you describe for us just briefly you know what town with the beginning of the process looks like via the creative process we points. We just sit down at a much like this over on the old. Glass of wine I try to make it as casual as possible at this I don't bring them into an office and sit and that opponent. You know intimidate them it's it's very relaxed and we just talked about how they would like to live how their living now home what's missing teeth and and what that might look like frank and from that. I get a sense of of of what the house might look like in that. Initial. Hah -- moment is is always kind of exciting and then. Sometimes you show it to them and airline -- it's not exactly. And then sometimes she showed to them and and then London so either way you it's a process and he prepare them for the process of of working through. The functionality working through. The budget the design aspects and that's you know it's where I like to bring. The children. Early on. Okay now you've led into it so you have to tell the stories the Wilson's story and how you two met. Well Darren is still volunteered at the insane asylum. Where you are frequent and yeah yeah he's a way to win with an outpatient at that point yeah. And he. Notes -- so. We were building houses next door to one another. Spec houses. Crazy. Outlandish. Multimillion dollar spec houses. Second dash back in the day. Depends which recession wasn't. This incessant Muslim who have fallen in Australia since around 2006. To. -- some time for -- get around there and and I got myself into a bad situation with a builder and the project was -- seeing and we struck up French and then I liked what he was doing. And they're looking over the Pentagon happy with that. After some and I thought. Who am I gonna get to help me finish this. And and I Aniston and I'm nervous first Jewish and who. That. Sooner or later he did help me finish it in and it was a great success and it's too. We. Had a lot in common in that we had both gone out on the limb. To do this. Thing that everybody thought I was crazy. And and we both. Seem to make it works you know. The next and you know interject here in the real estate agent we'll tell you that. Putting a three million or four million dollar house on an 80000 dollar piece of property is a mistake -- That's a win and I did OK yeah. I know we restarted right out and you're okay. Think the restaurant business was crazy. I don't know I'm so excited anything. And I wanted to plug those guys it's that's the worst business and the little news. Did -- like rock stars would you say led did you -- the builders and have a little rock star go to make sure yeah yeah. And then now I mean you can just sense that passion out of them. And it has to be that because the restaurant business in my mind as the most brutal business on the planet. I think depression is to be there more to your businesses as well I architecture homebuilding it's got to be there for sure any of those involved in this industry. And now we're gonna get a little bit more into the the passion for homebuilding and home designing and or the restaurant business. She -- just a little bit we're gonna get a quick break and when we come back. He -- like -- said radio bond -- on the radio on thirteen to 7 NEWS. To you then to me. Hometown here your -- your home our mission -- -- your dream home turning into a nightmare. 12917653. Or okay. Designs -- business today is easy enough she says radio song solo thirteen seventy. Hey we are backhand. We've gotten our featured at least early in the house and and I'm really excited now and then it's another favorite didn't dent another Daniel Siegel favorite -- yeah absolutely -- we -- south by just hang out this restaurant. It was a some good music some good Italian and there's nothing that I am I was us we have been better. So we have the votes from bottom Kelly's in the studio this evening and we have Andrew Matt and it's can't. -- -- And don't forget our line in oh yeah I -- in the NASCAR Lyon went bearish and so we didn't let some of the winds that we're gonna have tonight Jon Stewart yeah you go. Well I was excited to have these guys tomorrow when I saw what they are bringing along behind him. I saw lasagna was I was on the menu Soviets. Dish traditionally from Emilia. Romano which is just north of Tuscany a little bit and I only one line from there and it's a stock right now so who are around. We thought I would Tuscany and crypto -- so we've got to mid to lose to northern giant steps today reds NYC did your research gonna go very nicely yeah. -- why he's the wizard. That's why -- cast this spell on you today. And I did Italian wine -- John must have only that we import to fifty it's fine producers -- -- especially just a few you know. It's great and we have won California wind which no one's ever called Tony we're not it's. Now OPEC twelve annual Monterey exactly what he's going to work without delay its own so. Hey I injuries so tell us a little bit about. Toast flew that about five -- stuff. She sure. Or seven years old now. And we are mom and pops organization may have my brother here and our other partner Tim Brown. School. And you know it's it's really a restaurant and damage to. Two our grandmother and her mother in the Italian food that we grew up with and we want to share with us and that's very awesome -- seven it. Those little bit about the atmosphere and vibe that Bob Kelly. Share. Some people say it's kind of like. You know mole that lawyers say it's. I had -- undecided Somalia and back here now. Arkansas water -- -- -- You know it's it's a small tutorial about fourteen tables up front small bar and and you know white linens on the tables in an open not kitchen. And then now back we have a any. Well a beautiful beer garden that's got two huge live those that are probably 20300. Years old that kind of create this canopy in the in in the back and it's wonderful beautiful we -- music Thursday Friday Saturday. And it's just a lot of fun back there. So it's kind of few restaurants in one kinda he had absolutely kind of but yet it's still the same service still the same food and and you know it's still the same -- but yes it's definitely different vibes from the front and back. So everything you can get in the restaurant you can get out indeed beer garden that is correct -- Income. Was with great music and some heckling and yeah I gotta -- -- yes it's really nice. Easy to sit back unity that few beautiful lasagna and yell things like play free murdered there. Which you write down which as well as true but I was thrown out the backdoor for doing an unhappy I don't know that -- Latin. Okay and other false cinema and how might go out and be careful -- might not be fully honest tonight. Well you know I hope we'll we'll just have to find out when the boxing lessons playing and then we'll -- on discretionary down yeah. I think -- sound effect is right on yeah that's not a bad news well I'll tell you this story later. The chair OK yeah -- so. A little bit about the menu button -- Sure. What you're about to have his what we called the body -- bread. And am not read about that eight gag you know it's one of our staples would you read about it. It's out of curiosity. On the spot I was all over the web to I don't remember -- yet they had me. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The -- -- and it was mentioned and an -- monthly one time I wasn't sure that's we're okay where it came up as. Foes call the 5050. Top fifty truly sorry and so. You know we where we -- happy to have that and done. This was my grandmother's recipe where. Truly you know allele that the -- -- went back in the twenties and thirties whenever they make -- or any kind of possibilities. Left over duo. Any ingredients they would have kind of rapid enough. And it in the left over don't know whether it was onions have birds meets you know you name it so that -- was born how they act. Is this similar to Intel's own however cows on always as a red sauce and they would never puts us in there and who call garbage red. Yeah my under what part of at least your gym from there from -- -- maples and -- and -- So what are -- generation and now my great grandfather is one of the moment. But. Anybody tell you Brad is is we named it that. Deciding that had a better better than average eight actually better than I did I didn't see -- we sell this. Actually forty I think again just happened. We you know enemy from -- to a few weird thing it about -- -- you know but. But it's only Bradley's side to set a better name to a certain we could explain it differently than putting garbage in Brad you know. Yeah yeah yeah. Tonight over our menus. Yeah for we have. So tonight you know tonight we have a garbage bread and -- -- AKA. Then we are also giving you the Napoleon -- sorry V. We -- in the short trust them right. Not a -- -- -- poached pears. Did -- Truffle ill. Each smoked hazel nuts and and trumpet mushrooms who now where he's not going to be the first course very nice the other nice -- So. Meant when -- issued a game here that don't want him hog call it all the time. So. Actually -- come to to be working together. You vote in the food business -- the end what I mean we both are not somebody has to watch over hand eighty. We both menu and it's it's. For about 22 years twenty years plus teach started when I was eighteen years old I'm forty now. But. I achieved. Kyle was living in California for a while in Los Angeles to San Francisco and I was waiting tables and bar tending and -- various other things and she wanted to open a restaurant for a long long time and I wanna get out of her restaurant business for a long long time. But I got into another and I don't I don't I don't worry I'm actually staying in and him very you know it best if I went to join and I decided after pouring attack in San Francisco like let's get this a shot and moved down here in 2000. Bias at the end of 2005 in reaction hatteras stronger look John five north congress in nineteen congress. And is just kind of felt through luckily. Yes. -- hand. And we opened about a -- two and half years after I got down here but I it was it was nice because I was waiting tables of our attending all throughout town was sentenced. Tough congress they're saying free -- and capital brasserie and so I got to meet a whole bunch of people and death -- then and then we got such. Love the sport from all the restaurant business in town. -- them off. Said he got a lot of key learning from -- different restaurants to bring -- definitely definitely and not -- lasting friendships and the whole nine. So restaurant business and Austin is it is it is a cooperative -- community. I think your faith is an amazing place that I had never experienced anything like that I think is the very. Communal. CD and I think that actually all the restaurants in town. Look out for each other I don't find a competitive person say I mean of course -- you know the money to put people in your doors but. I find -- going to be incredibly. Part of a larger community and we all look out for each other which is Brady who and it all numerous all of -- for restaurants and from the South -- other. From dishwasher servers busters the owners and managers and it's a -- scene like that. City -- frequent each -- restaurants. Give each of us we do give each other feedback and whatnot yes sure I mean yeah yeah he did he mean. I don't know about a all the feedback because all the places that we're going to work fantastic I mean and the culinary scene in Austin, Texas is just. Isn't it -- blown up nationally yeah. So. So what I felt congress location. Because it came available this area had a -- -- on a last resort but it but it sounded like -- much happier there than you would have been our -- -- exactly now a you know the stars kind of -- -- we lucked out doing your patient to. You know we knew we want and and we didn't have a job and -- budget we -- You know still does that mom pops and we found this spot speed it was all under the radar on the table and say that legit. -- Not a -- But it was it was used to use this opportunity that we met we we're happy to have. You know I had a had a beer garden in the back and the existing pitch in hand I mean that's an excellent -- yeah yeah excellent. Absolutely so those who were lucky enough or are they also thought the places they also thought the place was curse though I don't know -- did -- it refers -- And right if -- just basically said that they think the Christmas Grosvenor street restaurants and three years at the location that we had. And we just saw a lot of opportunity and tough. Congress is such a great -- I remember Rahm among the previous owners had a lot of problems with the noise ordinance and there so these guys experienced some of that we know you can keep it clean did we did originally and you know in a lot of ways it was wonderful because it was a battle -- first but. We have. You know we have made friends with all our neighbors and made sure that you know we don't wanna come in there and ruin their lives where they're living however the same time. Live music is what this city is all about oh yeah very very comfortable space it's great he had yes so so. It all worked out great and we're all happy and we love our neighbors and. Well very cool well we're gonna take a quick break and when we come back we are going to get in to see some of that but it's Shelly branch that. And we're also gonna talk with -- either featured guest when -- architect and Gary Robinson with -- -- aren't so. Didn't change change that time we'll be right back. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Radio my -- thirteen seven. He's just so much happens on south congress dot. You know and all that resolves this in this weekend is -- is one of the craziest ones -- -- -- -- -- how right Israel and the guys was to kill it so does it does have a real positive effect on the business or -- do you actually see kind of a pain you know what it's not to. Losing it I think you know now after being there for seven years that the industry just has gotten so big that -- there is blues. And even the traffic down there is just. You know into the restaurant -- is going to be busy and -- for like a lot of times with all you know is not -- You know used to people just they -- their hot rods in front of the restaurant in the -- it's the sort of like a parade all day long after but. Sometimes people would have waited because there's no part in mud -- -- -- -- just it they would say that's just the whole streets busy so -- just. Sure and I can imagine you guys have a lot of -- like regular clientele that is walking distance from where you are now. Videos like curator was just walking on down he did yeah yeah fantastic that neighborhood Italian restaurant -- -- -- We choose differently on the patio right absolutely gotta love that means absolutely. So John and let's not be here to tell him what is it that you brought. Schumer -- -- to. -- having tried their lasagna now which was amazing from Canada -- -- an annual. This this far exceeded that attitude that is so college is under par last week against Erica just give them like hey I went remarks -- man coming. But it's. Brought some great -- the salad we had earlier. Had so many things going on I brought trivia I know. -- -- too -- -- -- Bruno I read on the grapes excuse me the banks of Lagarde this is really annoyed at. Beautiful it's a little heavier white wine doesn't see any -- not gonna get anything getting in the way of just beautiful truth of flavors. It goes really well with the -- they had in there and oh yeah I'll live this citrus in the in the dressing. Those as ailments. It's fantastic. And truffle oil all over the place and this one really held up to that I thought. There's an uninsured may hear from -- to -- -- very similar you know. Like I mentioned and it's just it's -- greatest city. And it just it just match really really well so note she's on the salad. Which was trying to fit if it had had some. Would have been great as well but the -- and -- with this engine racing that are brought from bullies say which is. Kind of on the coast not like grows there and around the -- committee mad scientists if you will from the -- and around today. And since -- -- C mostly stainless steel fermented. About six months he's really like Luke but it's great. Great price kind of punishment from the perceived. But it went really really well it went really well yeah I've got that kind of stole a -- C which is a key to Klesko came -- class there was a region got a -- in the -- you region. -- -- -- This man who has been working this property since the ninth century what I what I love about. Italy is just so much history in the trust in the -- secretions and everybody's left their footprint everywhere you know you've got a host of great -- That because then that just grow everywhere and you've got to know. A lot about Italian wine and food to know where this specific grapes or its its most difficult places to learn about. I'm still learning for sure and when his. We're gonna have six questions in the ladies are gonna go second it's going to be a rotation. The men lost last week so they get to pick the first question then we're gonna go through the six questions. And if we get to the lightning round I'll explain those rules. But basically there is there are two answers are right and wrong answer -- right -- would sound like they. Then as the all right all right no rest. We'll hear a lot of -- -- and if you have a wrong answer this is what it would sound like yeah my. Yeah. I heard that a lot last week. Their minor rob I think it was you know actually trying out for that role so gentlemen you are up. And there are the questions are one through six so you have full game to play on. Then your choice is. The third floor all things go our own and number are Jimmy -- comes in strong -- perform. So. Again I'm very clicked. A group of questions so yeah. The group you know you you love -- has found another way to exploit computer weaknesses again. Wanna -- they cheer him or had come home computer -- using simple text messages. Well that's what's going on so Microsoft has issued an emergency notice for which operating system. Is it windows XP Windows 7 or windows -- Please you can sit this one out it's the gentlemen who have all the horsepower in the studio. Which one does Microsoft say they need to put. We ended on -- major home. Like nobody disputed vick's name on. On the windows what was the expectation game picks apiece and I'm upset as they do with -- -- -- my first was it. That's the oldest one here that Gary says maybe I don't fugitive to break into there we got. No I believe NAFTA faster and be patching the new line. Soon you -- it's soon who wants to make the final call gentlemen on my own. Since everybody's in the studio who here has a computer because. Whoever hasn't -- Cocktail Linehan has the secret to punch it was an area it's Dixon and jet age and my money's -- -- -- to answer whatever Jack goes -- -- our -- -- has been Rocketboom so -- that's because he's still in a glass of wine and now there's an XP. I say a let's say that's the most recent thing heard it and I have windows eight non al-Qaeda -- and I. I'm not happy -- -- So soon. Consensus woman with a going I was going for -- answer split but of course the record. I'm. The trouble tomorrow wrong I'm going to Switzerland. Russia. It's -- are the bad -- that's the last four weeks ago that's a subsidiary totally neutral right Gary -- -- didn't hate. Windows say. You can -- okay. I don't know they have a gentleman to a variety had to ride XP is on the seasons -- an outlet not only. Yeah so guess -- run on April fool's. It's gonna happen on April do you -- there's going to be no more support updates security patches and it's Costello he's going to be beach. Down the drain so gentlemen you did not score on that one ladies you are. Compact all right ladies when we -- -- -- that we're -- women are waiting. It was a warm up yeah. So they pick course that we can take you now from one to six big -- report. What's that. Could still find a zoo all right we're the number June primary knows there's. Now yeah. And another strength not a moment and then another -- and. That's why we take breaks. So you don't like this front and the gentleman did not get this one but I'm not sure -- -- wheel house is would be him. But a Chile was a Florentine payment during the fourteenth century golden age. Which means all his works contained layers of symbolism. So which of his masterpieces celebrated the color of the coming of spring has it miss the missed. Mystical that you believe the birth of Venus corporate America. -- -- I don't know how I don't. -- Arafat and think wow we have a consensus running laying out how are you taking time ladies take -- times they get through but I think it through in the jungle is -- -- -- fish. What it is let me get he had to run mr. you know look at the mystical activity the birth of Venus more -- America remembers never the obvious answer -- -- -- and it's true to their credit nasty and -- -- -- yourself -- -- Unfortunately unfortunately I'm merely. Playing so lazy and. Now he's pretty content I -- he actually I. And I usually never heard the obvious answer -- so you know you think the birth and nativity that would not be -- -- Eight. Because I think it's I think you know here because. You know here comes your -- them and they can't bring. You're drinking and the other rule is that the call at last CNN's struggle to hold. The caller gets the last decision OK yeah you guys get the last decision. -- that Carroll was you know boys I think that that's okay. -- -- -- That's the all right off. -- remember there is a tapestry about the mother nature or commonly known as -- and vegetable. And there you're serving -- -- phones in the minimum ninety day Malhotra -- ask them and know there. So I really exciting is -- is pure case. All right gentlemen -- you -- trying to get on the scoreboard included one through 61. More than -- taken. Just leave it up to the you know the home guys. Architects and builders and you know -- nice there's one line yeah yeah number two run. All right so. In LA. To the new buyer. Is it over eighty million over ninety million or over a hundred million. What's the operating system in the house and you can. And it was a little lower them. This is just a crapshoot no -- Let's go what's the most isn't as one of the girls questions is you Isuzu is the most expensive what's the most expensive house you've ever heard -- has gone. -- -- -- -- -- -- Who knows. Yeah. Well remember this is five acres in LA and it looks like Versailles fifteen bedroom shifting bathrooms. And a 133 plasma televisions. Let's just kidding about the Kennedys go and so what are they answer choices again 89 deer hunter -- -- an era over a hundred million. So are you saying it cost him fifty. No we're not talking cost you just sold it for this for this amount of money is in over eighty million over nine million over a hundred million -- Up to this question do you guys know what the most expensive house ever sold for was -- amount. Luncheon on the middle Sunday night I know why am I kind of agree there is actually go we go. Let's go by avoiding PS what's numbered because it's happening in different architectural department. They just build and don't sell nothing good comes in ninety Andrew I don't know -- and I'm -- I don't know -- -- they sort of remind people -- -- -- -- on our way through the UFO a lot of -- press on this sign -- into that game. Soon nineties where a landing with a song come on now is -- -- -- and I. And -- second guess -- -- 180. Catalog is John. They may have actually John Proctor and five million terrorism to the back story Melissa was owned by a network billionaire and guess what. From Houston.
