Best match our need to -- really truly enjoy what they do they know what they own it we look forward to our -- it's. Engine quit and I think over time to welcome back to travel time with Karen on -- thirteen seventy. Once again here's your host Karen Duncan. Welcome back to show its travel time -- caring so let's get started. Travel trends. You know Diane Sawyer did a segment on hurt her new show. This past year about by American. So I decided that our first segment. Our show should be about US travel. Travel agents are known for sending people away from. The United States to exotic destinations animal house. What I have found a report. By CNN. The names the top ten US spots to visit. In 2014. And I mean given to you -- reversed order I think you're gonna be really surprised. With this list because. Most of them are nothing. You would expect to be on the list of the top ten spots in the US to visit. We usually look at Vegas and LA in New York City in places like that Honolulu Hawaii. So I think you'll be surprised so let's get started with this one number ten low nine hole why. This is a relatively undeveloped island and Hawaii. And it's a ten because it is under developed it's a great dive spot and that thing that makes it. On the top ten list is because it is a great dive destination. And it's not very. Commercialized. So if you like to go to exotic places that there's not going to be a lot of people around this would be great place. Number nine is going to be Sun Valley, Idaho. And I know you're going Idaho potatoes yes Idaho. It's less expensive. And less crowded vacation and there are sought to the mountain. Which is. Something to be seen from what I understand. And there are many many culinary events and world class skiing hiking. World class skiing and hike. In the summer. -- If you're looking for something off the beaten path in the United States. Looks like Sun Valley is one of those places you need to put nine year destination list. Las Vegas, Nevada now I did say Vegas was one of those places that we weren't gonna talk about because as ordinary. But. There are things to do in Vegas other than the casinos. There's an art district that is -- coming and not many people know about our district and Las Vegas. And that there is the high roller Ferris will that's gonna open and 2014. So Vegas is trying to re brand themselves do little. Something outside of just gambling in casinos -- they tried to deal several years back where they were. Marketing to families and I don't know whether that worked out well or not because who wants kids in the casino. So they're trying something new so for you artsy types I think. You may need to start looking at Vegas as an alternative. Cumberland island Georgia is number seven on the list. Has great national seashore collection of sea island's on the southeast Atlantic coast. And it's under developed back country great for backpacking wild Turkey. While turkeys that she can hunt more and something else that's pretty interesting is the first African Baptist Church. There and Cumberland and it dates back to 1890 story. And there are ruins of a -- any mention Carnegie mansion I have to get there were right. So Cumberland Georgia has a lot of opportunities is quite diverse tennis and it's also a place and I never would have imagined being on the top. -- lists -- US destinations. Number six Kansas City, Missouri. What do we know back Kansas City. Barbie Q. Now. It is up for debate on whether barbecuing Kansas city's going to be better than barbecue in Texas. So far I'm not convinced that there's much. Better barbecued anyplace and stated taxes but will -- will try this. So Kansas City, Missouri number six on the list more than 100 spots or Barbeque at 200 fountains. Jazz and a vibrant African American community. So that might be some someplace in the midwest you might wanna put on your list for different to any sport team. Jersey Shore New Jersey. -- home. Everyone knows about the Jersey shores and the reason it made the list this year is because it's known for lots of family fun. But it's also in a rebuilding base and. They need people to visit Jersey Shore said that they can. Get themselves together financially. Tourism is an economic development powerhouse. And if we stop going to Jersey Shore because of sandy. Then we may have some problems and may may have some problems and we want to support those people found in Jersey Shore. Number 4. Central coast California. Drab and along now how way. That's what it's good or highway one lots of nice ends in restaurants along the coasts. Consider to be one the most overlooked romantic areas in California. People always wanna go to those big place display at central coast California is is the place to go in Monterey bay aquarium is celebrating their thirtieth anniversary this year. And -- sole -- bowls. Wine country. How busted -- right cost -- broad list. Wine country. Is said to rival Napa and Sonoma. According to woman who wrote the article. Number three. Boston Massachusetts. Not like Boston. I'm from Chicago originally. But one of the things I. Liked about Boston. After being in Texas are so long was the the ability to. Walk everywhere that we win and it's a clean big city. But the reason it's number three is it's also a city and recovery. After the Boston Marathon bombing last year -- be celebrating. The first year of the marathon after the bombing and we need to celebrate. With them and support them in taking tourism back to the city during this time period. Also is the history of the Freedom Trail and the bill in hand tavern which is the nation's oldest tavern. -- believe that the oldest tavern. And the US is in Boston and I know that when as a boss and I want it gone in there because. I like -- -- taverns. And find out what the local spirits are. When I travel. So yeah. Boston is number three on the list. We're history groups those of the once -- need to -- I'm thinking about Boston so let's take a break right now. And I'll come back until you -- number two and number one are on the list. CNN minutes it's -- son -- -- the holiday season is -- you've just spent time making memories with family cooking cleaning spending a ton of money vacation planning it's probably the last thing on your mind but -- -- cruises and tour's health plan your next vacation we provide vacation planning on any financial and time budget the -- -- -- the less extensive purification will be let our certified in between travel specialists find that perfect experience that you and your loved -- contact us at 5122976091. We need to help those spokes and recovery and rebuilt. Number five. Central coast California. Aquariums line -- area number four. Boston Massachusetts another city going to recovering. So. Let's look at number two Yosemite national park California. The third most visited national park in the country. There's a theme here you not noticed. We have several cities in several areas that are in recovery. And the quickest way to help them recover -- terrorism. With the governmental shutdown and the rim fire at the park. And the surrounding community took a big hit in 2013. Who want to help those folks recover as well. Number one. Yes. Everybody gas and you're -- it -- -- blood is number one top team US cities. To visit in 2014. Grand Rapids. And -- thinks she can. Go blue and the University of Michigan and by the way don't hate me. So why is this area number one. According to Waldman. The reporter for CNN. This this area deserves attention by those who love our. Beer. Food. And the beach. Yes that's at the beach in Michigan. No one ever thinks about the midwest but Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan. Is known for food festivals almost all year round. And has 25. Craft beer breweries. I need to maybe get that right breweries. My husband has a big beer drinker. And he's gonna go back home -- he's from Detroit and he had no idea. But anyway. Art lovers the Grand Rapids our -- and and Gregory. My year gardens and sculpture park is available. Those that are in to the arts. So that's it you guys the top ten destinations. For 2014. In the United States. Let's make sure we support. US travel. As you thinking about your. Bucket list and Europe vacations this coming year. So let's go on. To some oh I forgot to tell you about the beaches in Grand Rapids thirty miles down the coast. Is going United States most unexpected beach getaways. Sugary white sand beaches OK if you are listening to me right now what I would like you to do is hit me up on FaceBook that's -- PE EKS. Cruises and tourists. It -- up on FaceBook and let me know some of the spots that you think are need to be mentioned on the show for US vacation spots. And I don't mean your regular Disney in New York type of stuff. Found give me something that people may not think it could be some placing your your home town of where -- from some places you Dan. And -- we'd like to hear funny so we can talk about it next week on -- show. So let's talk about the international destination. Or of the week. Barbados. In the Caribbean. Are you familiar. It's a little jammed down in the southern part of the Caribbean not think you guys would be interest today and beautiful beaches. Great people great food of course says that's most important up on most people's agenda when they go to a new destination. So let me tell you a little bit about. Now Barbados. It is. A world heritage site. Because of historic Bridgetown garrison. Is the first world heritage property in Barbados. And. Beautiful monument to that is in the center of Bridgetown. And I think if you're history -- you would be very surprised it. The amount of effort they've put into this facility to. Demonstrate what Barbados has been through the last 400 years. Where they come on crop over. There's a festival now everybody knows about Mardi Gras in New Orleans and we know about car on a ball in Brazil. But I can guarantee you that Barbados has a passable I can rival them all it last three months. Not three days three months I was -- for the end edit. Last year which is the most important. And when I tell you it starts at 1 AM on Friday night -- goes through Monday I'm really serious. So you've got to get down there. Next. August. 4 crop over. The food the food is fabulous just like everything else in the Caribbean. There are some places that I meant tell you about that once you go eat when I come back from break. So we'll stay tuned for food in Barbados. And I wanted to get away for a 25 wedding anniversary we haven't been a wave would sell kits for years we've reached Al and that that they can. Pull something together forest which would be special and memorable well -- itself apart they were very very clear transparent about available options pricing and about what would. Acts are need to -- really truly enjoy what they do they know what they own it we look forward to our next adventure with. Because of course. Welcome back to travel time with Karen I'm talking thirteen seventy. Once again here's your host. Karen Duncan. So we're talking about. Barbados. In the southern Caribbean. The little jewel that. That's down there that not a whole lot of people from Texas know about. Someone to tell you about where you need to go when you wanna eat in Barbados boy since fish fry. Yes I said fish fry. There is a place in Barbados that every one goes to locals and tourists. Included every Friday evening. In his lack of festival every Friday they have live music. Fresh seafood right out of the ocean and I talked and lobster crab. Dorado. You name it that it's there you won't find cat is so if you let -- forget -- forget about it but festival atmosphere. It's wonderful it's a big event so we have to get there early find your spot get in line. And there's about. I would say thirty vendors that cooks -- yet to find your favorite. Restaurant that's represented there to cook the food -- -- the lobster house. Now we've been looking for fresh lobster since I've been back from Barbados not tell my husband and I had gone to the lobster house and he hadn't found any lobster -- anybody that they're listening and that Austin, Texas area that. Makes -- lobster tail -- one and a half. Willett and for lobster tail but the lobster house is the place that you need to visit why you're there. They have -- the Barbados did in one -- festival that occurs in the fall every year that's a wonderful opportunity if you are -- duty. Or if you'd like wine tastings. And they've added the run because of course you have a local -- down there. Which is the mountain gay rom. -- to you need to sample little bits at a time because I made the mistake of taking a big. Shot like you would do tequila. The first time I went down there and I would suggest she start slow so Barbados is our pick -- the week or. Tropical destination. Our international destinations I wanna do a pick of the week -- quick before this show is over in my pick of the week is. US and homegrown. Is this man Luis resort and spa and Galveston Texas. That places ambulance and a little bit in detail about it is that the re a board diamond award winning. Resort and spa and is located. In the gulf on the Gulf Coast. Of Galveston. It's also a conference center so if you have for us. Organization that needs to Gaudin -- have a spot to do a conference. It's a great place or used to be right on the water. Featuring unparalleled hospitality dining entertainment. Meeting and convention facilities. As a sixteen story. Where all the guest rooms 250 of them I have the balcony.
